Definition of a successful weekend?

This weekend was filled with sunny gorgeous skies, air that smelled of fall leaves, and lots of little loose ends being tied up around the CattyAbode. My goal is to have most of my 'in process' projects done by the end of the month. Izzy's goal was to knock pillows over to have a comfy place to sunbathe.

So I'd say we both had successful weekends!

My newest BFF

Edited to link up to Like Mother, Like Daughter

May I present my [Pretty] DIY manicure using Sally Hansen Nail Effects. This is Blue Ice (a denim-like blue grey) on Day 4. I cleaned, did dishes, worked on stripping veneer and my nails are still perfectly polished. In fact, I finally took the polish off today (Day 7) simply because I was getting nail growth at the base of my nails and I wanted to try the Pink Ice strips I had purchased.

Before I continue, thank you Anna for blogging your real-life test drives!
Pros (for me): [Happy]
  • Application is less messy and quicker than a 'wet' manicure.
  • Immediately able to use my hands after applying the strips: no 'dry time'.
  • My nails look professionally polished.
  • At least 7 days of great looking nails (no small feat in my professional and domestic worlds.)
Cons (for me): [Real]
  • Limited color range: neons, camo, and some of the graphics are not where I live.
  • Cost: the strips range from $9.00 - $10.00 where I live in Northern New England. However, for me some of that cost is balanced out by the shorter application time and longer wear time that I get from a 'wet' manicure.
Some things I discovered while applying Nail Effects:
A) Nail prep is crucial. Remove all previous polish, push back your cuticles, and use the buffer/file enclosed with the kit to buff the top of your nail bed. I also did a quick swipe of isopropyl alcohol just to make sure the surface was oil-free.
B) Due to the length of my nails, I could do two nails off one strip. My method was apply a strip to one nail, gently stretch until separated in half, and apply that half to the corresponding nail on the opposite hand. At that point, I would smooth the polish strips down with the enclosed cuticle stick, rubbing the exposed edge of my nail to create a 'fold' and then gently file the excess away with the enclosed buffer/file.
C) The strips are stretchy, so you can gently pull the edges to cover your nail all the way to the sides.
D) Start with your pinkies and work your way in towards your thumbs.
E) The kit comes with 2 foil packets of 8 nail strips. Once you open a foil packet, you must discard  the unused strips. This stuff is real nail polish, and any exposure to air will eventually dry them out.
F) Don't worry about the cuticle edges while you are applying the strips. I found it easiest/least stressful to get the strips applied and smoothed down, then go back with a pair of cuticle nippers and neaten up the edges. If you use the pointed edge of the cuticle stick, you can get most edges pushed down and secure - any remaining part of the strip will dry out and can be easily snipped away at the end of the application process.
G) If you make a mistake on a nail, gently scrap it off with your cuticle stick (or use polish remover on a cotton swab.) You can easily trim an extra strip to cover the boo boo; any overlap simply acts like a second coat of polish. I use the largest of the strips as my backup/spare.
H) Use a clear topcoat! For the glitter strips, it smooths down the texture and creates a nice finish. I applied a top coat on Day 1 and then on Day 5, just for a bit of protection. The Sally Hansen top coat I used (which I had before I bought the strips) dried quickly; since the strips are 'dry', there aren't several coats of polish that have to harden and dry all at once.
I) Take your time. The beauty of these babies is that you can use your hands immediately after applying the strips and they look great for days. So slow down and do it right!

I was in no way perked or comp'd for this post: I really think this product rocks the casbah! However, if Sally Hansen heeds my plea for a deep wine shimmer strip and is looking for a name, may I suggest "Medusa"? [Funny]

Palette Inspiration

From the side of a yogurt container. Liberte's Coconut yogurt to be exact. I love this color chart. A little too cool for our Vermont apartment, but still very soothing and classy. Where have you found inspiration?

*facepaw*

Don't you hate it when you're happily working on a pattern (that you've knit before) and somewhere about 1/2 way through you realize, "Hey I forgot an integral step (dropping the stitches) the creates the whole look I'm going for!"

Yeah, me too!

Memorial Day - On top of Ol' Whiteface

...covered in black flies. (Sung to the tune "On top of spaghetti")
But at least the views were spectacular.
Here's the view from the top, looking at Lake Placid

And here's the westerly view.
Visibility was the best it had been in weeks - 40 miles.
The weather was a breezy 59 degrees. Now for those black flies...

In my craft room [Happy]

My crafting chair: a recycled flannel pillow case, shortened and slightly tailored to fit over the back of the chair. The doily was Plattsburgh thrift mall find: isn't the donkey cute?

Here is the Ovenex cookie sheet done over as the bulletin board.
The bumper sticker says, "What happens here, stays here. But nothing ever really happens." The genie card is a birthday card from the CatMan. On the front, the genie is saying, "You have one more wish", and the dog is saying, "You may want to give this some thought" with two shiny balls of yarn in front of the cat. The inside of the card shows the cat ecstatic over the third ball of yarn. The fortune cookie fortunes say "Generosity and perfection are your everlasting goals." (yikes, they nailed that one!) and "You have a house with beautiful gardens in your future." (I believe it's an eternal one.)

On top, the photo in the black frame is a teenage CatMan, complete with um...crazy hair. The little turtle pin is the first piece of jewelry I remember getting: my grandmother gave it to me when I was 6 years old. There's also an vintage, 3-sided wooden ruler (my parents still have one in their junk drawer at home), and a little orange ninja (orange is my favorite color, and I tease the CatMan all the time about 'being a ninja').

The other items just make me smile: a little forest-y Christmas ornament, Adirondack chairs that look similar to the one in an old photo of my grandfather, a friend's herd of llamas, and a happy little boy with the caption "Jump In."

Long weekend

And the "new" linen cabinet is stripped. The wood isn't nearly as nice as it looks in this picture, so I'm sticking with my original plan of painting it. Next up is the priming!

40 days - the Goodwill trip

A total of 100 items donated! The CatMan dropped it off the other day, and as far as I know, none of it made it's way back into the house. Not even that Braveheart video...

40 days - Misguided reasons

The eggs are appropos of nothing - image courtesy of Google images, saved to my server.
During this "Lenten" 40 days of purging, I've been thinking about why I keep stuff (and why I shouldn't!)
"Someone gave it to me" - doesn't mean I need to keep it.
"I paid a lot of money for that" - doesn't mean it was a smart choice then or it fits my life now.
"I really really wanted it" - ditto
"I love it, but..." - why do I love it? Can I make it work in my home now?

40 days - Week 1

I made some great progress in my Lenten 40-day home purge. My criteria for this purge is to pare down to what I really love/need/gotta clean. Purged items will include those things I thought I had to hold on to...for whatever misguided reason.
My process: Almost every night after dinner this week, I picked an area to purge. Keeping it small - like our nightstand tables - made the process less daunting and kept me from taking on more than I wanted to handle in an hour or so. I just pulled stuff out and moved it to my craft room work table. Yesterday morning, I spent a few hours sorting everything into its appropriate pile, boxing it all up, and taking pictures.
Here's the donate pile: the yarn is going to Hats for Hunger, the books to the Colchester book sale box, and the other stuff to Goodwill (the prescription bottles hold costume jewelry.)
Donate pile #2 to Goodwill.
Garbage (including some expired medicines, toiletries, and hopelessly tangled yarn.)
Recycling (you can't see it in this pic, but the cans are sitting on a big ol' stack of paper.)
Items from the kitchen - most of it going into the yard sale box.
More stuff for the yard sale box.
Totals so far: Some items are grouped as 1 item - for example, the stack of paper for recycling.
Garbage: 22 items
Recycling: 12 items
Donated: 38 items
Yard sale: 75 items
For a current total of 147 items purged out of our home!

Rooms purged:
Living room, bathroom, my desk area, craft room, night stands, clothes closet and bureau, kitchen.
Left to do:
Storage areas (2), off-season clothing.

40 days

I've mentioned before that my denomination does not celebrate Lent, however I personally love the concept; some of my favorite posts are here and here.
This year for Lent I'm going to do a 40-day home purge. My goal is to purge at least 40 items per room/area. I'll be tracking my progress via pictures.

This should prove interesting!

Snow day

Today was an unexpected snow day. So after a mid-morning nap, I jumped into straightening out the closet cubby. A few years ago, I had sorted through our photographs, but decided today was the day to take it one step further.
I saw this idea a few weeks ago (scroll down 1/2 way through the post) and realized it was just what I needed to finish my job. I didn't get as decorative as she did, but the need was fulfilled. I used .80 cent pencil cases from Big Lots which fit all the prints except the panoramic ones. For less than $5.00, I'm happy.

And for those of you who are wondering why the CatMan has so many more containers, they consist of his travels, climbs, and hikes. My fun stuff gets posted to the blog.

Look at the kitty [Pretty]

Here's something for the Pretty category...at least she thinks she is!
And be distracted from the lack of actual blog content. There is some coming, I promise! But until then, here's Izzy.

Thinking Spring

It's been waaaay below zero here for the past few days. To counteract the chill that seeps into bones (not to be thawed for a few more months), I'm thinking Spring. (all images from Google Images, saved to my server)

Lilacs (should have been our state flower!)
Lambies!

The cure to what ails me

When I'm not feeling motivated or crossing items off my list, a quick organizational project makes me feel better. Here's the top drawer of my tool chest. I just sifted through some of the stuff that had accumulated there and put it all in the proper containers. *sigh* I'm happy for a little while.
And hopefully the touch up spackling and painting project will be finished this weekend. I sanded down the craft room area and found it needed one more coat before I painted.

Good Intentions

Ah, the fresh beginning of the new year.
Ah, the reality of the weekend after as witnessed below -

One project on my to-do list is to organize all my seasonal decorations in one place. Well I got them all in one place, but this is neither the organization or the place where they will eventually reside.
(See that white strip behind the chair? That's one of the spots I need to finish spackling/touching up.)

There's more on top of the pie safe.
However the interior of the pie safe was purged and organized this week.
With all this organizing and purging, the knitting WIPS are languishing in the project box. :- (
Here's hoping 2011 week 2 will see some items crossed of the list!

We're back from our Tour. Much fun was had by all, gifts were given and received (and appreciated on both sides), and I even got in a little junqing in Lewisburg and State College. I'll post some pics once I finish digging out of our dirty laundry!
